Writing as 'T.L. Curtis', I have self-published 2 books so far.

If you've read either of these pieces, please feel free to leave a comment on the book's Facebook page (listed below the title), on the 'The MSSW' Facebook page (facebook.com/themssw), or at the bottom of this page. If it's really nasty, just email it to me (consulttenesha@gmail.com) and I'll read it and cry in the privacy of my own home. :D

This novelette is a nice, short melodrama exploring vanity and societal norms and expectations. It's my take on what our society is like if it's reduced to it's more basic roots. The story revolves around the two main characters, Erika and Alice. Erika is beautiful, sexy, and wanted by pretty much every man she meets with the exception of her own husband (or "master"). Erika abides by all the social laws that are in place around her governing how she's supposed to look, talk, walk, and dress. She has a true passion and love for these mores because she is so easily able to fit into the mold that they create and even excel at doing do. Her neighbor and "frenemy", Alice, is the exact opposite. She looks, talks, walks, and dresses however she wants and treats her husband as her equal, not her superior. She isn't aggressive in getting other people to shrug off the vane guidelines that have been set up in the world, but she's assertive enough not to let herself by ruled by them. I really had a lot of silly fun with thinking up a way for Erika to respond to Alice's blatant disregard for the social rules Erika decides to hold up as gospel once she confirms that her own master is replacing her.

Chapter 1: Blush

Erika heard the scream from across the courtyard. It was brief, harsh, and lovely. She slid down the side of the high bed, the achromatic silk sheets rustling quietly, her master twitching slightly in his ignorant slumber, and made her way to the open window welcoming a warm, summer breeze. She could see precious little due to her angle, the distance, and the pulled shade of the neighboring house. But she found delight in hearing the man sobbing on the phone to 911; the woman panting in pain and amazement; the hectic movement of limbs, mere shadows, jerking as he lifted her, and the gray ghosts grew fainter and fainter until they dissipated. Erika smiled—relieved, calmed, avenged— let out the breath it felt like she’d been holding for years, and made her way back to bed.

I have been writing poetry since I was a very small child, so I had plenty of material to choose from. The poems that I did select to be part of 'Feign' were chosen because of a mix of praise I had received from those who had read them, my personal fondness and preferences, and what I thought really helped produce a true, full-bodied poetry-reading experience. I have come across several anthologies and collections from single artists who had a book full of poetry that all sounds pretty much the same. I can understand the odd sets of poems being alike, but I have a hard time understanding why a reader would want to read pages and pages of poetry about the same old stuff. So, I opted to go in the other direction. I cover love (duh!), hatred, aging, necrophilia, sex, murder, politics, and depression.

When Debra Daumier reviewed 'Feign', stating that my poetry was "like a chocolate box", I knew I had accomplished what I set out to do.
